remuer le popotin

Last night, I was fretting to [livejournal.com profile] fennel about how fast N is learning French, and how OMG hey wait! I don't know any of the kid words! I've never spent a lot of time around the under-12 set, and so I have no idea how the kids and teachers at her school are going to refer to kid things, like pee and scrapes and toilets and thumb-sucking and security blankets. I can argue with you over beers about gender politics, but I can't ask you if you've used the potty. I feel like this may be a problem. Even if I don't need to use those words myself, I need to hear them in context and understand them! Aaa! Etc. He said, "it's okay, she'll let you know." I thought, man, I sure hope so.

Sure enough, this morning, she climbed into bed and snuggled up to me and said, "mommy, popotin means bum. Or bum-bum. Or butt." Well! Now I know. Thank you.

heh. [livejournal.com profile] fennel is smart. and you won't be the first parent of a bilingual kid to have her teach you, not by a long shot.

Luckily, she is patient with me. :)

This child is three, right? Three whole years on this planet? God. Such little sponges they are, absorbing EVERYTHING.

Schoenhof's might be of use to both of you. Of course, you can't anticipate kid slang. Learning the word pee doesn't help if they call it wee, right? However, some little kiddy books might be handy. Also, I bet YouTube or *somewhere* on the internet has French langauge TV that could teach you kiddy words.

Yah, we've been going to the French library and renting kid videos and getting out kid books because Schoenhof's has ridiculous prices, and hey, library! I'm not completely without resources. I just don't know what I don't know, you know?

"I just don't know what I don't know, you know?"

Isn't that how much of life goes? And with a child even more so?

I totally use the word bum-bum with Stephen just to hear him repeat it. The glee I'd feel to hear it in French, too!

Come to think of it, he said "caramba" this past weekend. That was fun.
