Where is my Google Tune Search? You know, tunes.google.com. I hum a few notes of a tune into a mic, maybe select a genre, click "Google Search", and then get back a list of low-quality mp3s that will help me find that god damned song that I'm thinking of.

Did you mean: dat doo doo doo, dat dah dah dah?

No. I did not.

You've sent this to google, right?

Nah -- I'm not sure it would be workable. How would you index the songs? What if it's just the backup singer's part that's going through my head, or what if I get the words wrong?

Maybe, though. If it were helpful 50% of the time, I'd be ecstatic.

well, shoot, you'd probably want melody line 99% of the time, and you could probably pull that out. ignore the words. just like karaoke revolution!

Thing is, regular google works okay if you know a section of the lyrics (assuming you have the words right). Most of the time, anyway. 'Course, that doesn't help with listening to the song, just finding out what song it is.

This came about because I had a bit of the instrumental melody from "She Blinded Me With Science" running through my head. More often than not, I can hum more of a song's tune than I can accurately remember of its lyrics.

Really, an awful lot of things go through my head. My head is like that. I suppose I can actually identify most of the tunes, though.

It would be kind of fun to post nothing but phone posts of the things I am hearing in my head for a month. I'm sure you'd all find out something you didn't want to know.

I'm sure the internet could hear the thinly-veiled scorn. It is the internet, after all: despite having an enormous penis and knowing the locations of all the postal codes in the world, it's awfully insecure.

That's pretty keen, but I'm surprised that two out of the four melodies I tried aren't in their database. (The Lonely Goatherd, and London Bridge is Falling Down)

bless you!

Yeah, I *really* want this. I was just thinking about that this morning, as I was listening to the instrumental bit of a song whose lyrics I've never been able to make out. I remember reading a few months ago (maybe on Slashdot about a company with a for-pay service like this via cell phone — the idea is that you subscribe to their service, and then you can dial their number and hold your phone next to a speaker playing a song and it will identify the song for you. Much easier to implement, but requires being able to call them while the song is still playing, and looking like a goon trying to hold your cell phone up close enough to the TV mounted in the corner of the bar. :-)

OOOOH! I love this idea.

Not that I need to be spending *more* time googling, but I already use it as a lyric search, so this is something of a natural progression.:)

I once did this to a guy at a music store looking for an album with Tom's Diner (Suzanne Vega). It was pretty embarrassing but it worked. It would be less embarrassing with google.
