D: Oh good lord.
M: What?
D: She just grabbed both ends of the alarm clock and pulled it toward her face to gnaw on.
M: Tasty!
D: Terrifying.
M: Yes, maybe the desire to chew on everything and the love for electronics don't mesh so well.
D: Yeah -- maybe this is the period of time where buying electrical cords with blue LEDs in them is a bad idea.

[pause while M reflects on the cable she bought with blue LEDs in it the other day]

M: But it was shiny!
D: EXACTLY.

Eek. Um, they may be low power, but the plastic is almost certainly PVC, which used to be a popular plastic for baby toys, but is now banned for such things due to the plasticizers (phthalates) in it.
Also, more worrisome is the fact that lead is often found in PVC in sufficient quantities that the state of California requires warning labels advising people to wash their hands after handling them, keep away from children, etc. And lead is said to taste sweet. Since it's used as a whitener, the black ones are probably less dangerous than the light-colored ones.
Definitely not a good chew toy for babies.

Them being low power was kind of a pathetic "oh well, look what *else* the baby is getting into" kind of joke - I certainly don't hand her
the cables on purpose so she can play with them, but when I am using the computer while holding her she is getting better and better at grabbing for the cables and getting them in her mouth. Along with the front corner of the laptop, any piece of paper she can grab, my face, my big glass water mug, my hands, my watch, etc. She does have plentiful amounts of her own toys, but those are obviously no fun. I just need 4 hands to hold her, type, and remove her hands from everything she grabs that she
isn't supposed to, but that's how moms evolve. ;-)

I did just recently learn about the issue of lead content of vinyl/PVC,
though cables were not one of the things I'd thought about being made of
PVC.
