Do you know of any good day care providers in the area for an under-12-month-old?

(Er, please don't reply to this with anything other than "yeah!" or "maybe!" and some information about the people you have in mind.)

Maybe!

Let me say up front that the spurious basis for this "recommendation" is this: my aunt and uncle live next to one of these centers and while housesitting for them, I noted that the kids there seem to be having a great time and was impressed by the teachers' willingness to let them run around and shriek and do messy things :) So it's more of a recommendation that they might be worth checking out than anything else. Obviously I don't have kids and therefore have no direct experience of these things. Anyway, the centers are called A Place To Grow and there are I think two in Arlington...

Awesome! I am in favor of happy yelling and messiness. :) I will check them out! Thanks!

I think -- either, really, if I like them.

Nancy in Arlington. I will email you her phone number, although it's entirely likely she doesn't have space for an infant, as I think she can only have one infant at a time.

Several of my friends have been impressed with her. She provides care in her home, has infinite patience, and does all sorts of activities with them (outings, crafts, cooking, etc.)

The only downside (if this is even a downside) is that she's been providing care for small children for so long that she no longer notices smelly diapers. I'm not saying she doesn't change diapers, just that she does so on a schedule and/or when the child is bothered, not by noticing the smell.

My workplace is full of two-to-twenty-month-olds, with varying daycare arrangements. I can ask around if you wish.

(But "in the area" may lean towards Cambridge or Boston...)

Co-worker #1, who has a 12 month old, says that despite the fact that it's a large corporation they liked the look of Bright Horizons in Watertown, and found the people very friendly and good with the kids. They ended up not using them because 9 months ago they had no openings for the 1-2 days per week, which is what they were looking for.

Maybe!

Have you checked out the website for the EEC, the child care licensing agency? The website (www.mass.gov/eec) will give you a list of providers by type (family or center). You can call the agency for complaint history about any program you're interested in.

I've called my friends who are closing their child care home (they're moving out of state) and asked if they will recommend anyone else for you. I'll let you know if they have any recommendations.

Small has been going to Moppets at the Alewife T stop since she was about 15 months, and they've been great -- low staff turnover, lots of activities for the kids, kind and gentle approach to behavior, and they've really gone the extra mile in dealing with her diabetes.

I don't have direct experience with the infant care, but the babies and the baby rooms look good to a casual observer.
