So, tonight, miz N rules-lawyered me for the first time. The girls were playing at the base of the stairs while [livejournal.com profile] starphire and I hung out and watched. S was jumping up and down in a bouncy chair, and N was running about doing, y'know, whatever it is she does, when she got it in her head to go upstairs.

Me: No, Natalie, we're not going upstairs right now. We're going to stay down here and play.
N: *thinks about this*
Me: Come down off the stairs, please.
N: *sits down on the first stair*
Me: Thank you! That's fine, you can sit on the first stair.
N: *stands up on the first stair*
Me: The first stair is okay, but we're staying down here, so no more stairs.
N: *teasingly starts up the stairs*
Me: No, stay down here. No more stairs. Stay on this stair, the first stair. The one with the crab on it. (*puts a toy crab on it*)
N: *thinks*...
N: *moves crab up a stair, climbs up, moves crab up another stair*...

Now, I'm sure everyone could see that coming but me. I have no idea why I decided that I should say "the one with the crab on it" and not "the one I'm sitting on" or, really, anything unaffectable by small girls, but there you have it. She found the loophole in my shoddy decree in less than five seconds.

In other news, we have a long bike ride planned for tomorrow. Rather uncharacteristically, we were totally packed and ready before 11 PM. Like, clothes out, warm socks located, camera charged, bikes and gear in the car (which is full of gas), camelbaks stuffed full of goodies, diaper bag packed for N's day out with [livejournal.com profile] dancingwolfgrrl ready. Huh.

"That's Not a Binky!"

What a smartypants she is!

I'm repeatedly surprised by how smart small children are, and how quickly they can outwit adults, sometimes. Keeps a person light on their feet, or brain, or something....

The first time I babysat Marcos, who was 3, he asked me for his binky. I had no idea what this was. I brought him a "blankie". He looked at me and said, incredulously: "That's not a binky!" I asked him to show me where the binky lived. He pointed at this one cupboard. I didn't believe him, but I opened it, and there was the stash of pacifiers, in a cup.

*heart melted* I think I gave him one, and he asked for an extra (another 'rule-push', but I didn't know!)....I was so tickled that he knew just where to get the right thing....*melted-in-a-pool-of-babylove*

Your child is a genius. Haven't I already told you that? Well, it bears repeating.

Ok, I'm sorry. I should not laugh. I should not lau---BWAH-HAH-HAAAH!!

There's a Mother's Curse at work there, you know. Somewhere in your possibly far-back past, your mother wished that someday you would have a child JUST LIKE YOU.

Nah, don't hold back. Laugh all you want.
I laughed heartily when it happened.
"She totally outwitted her mommy", I cried.

I actually didn't see it coming...

Hello N, retroactively!

Oh dear. Being outwitted by one's own child is just cuter than anything
else they can do, somehow.

[livejournal.com profile] gljiva wanted to know what I was laughing at, but I somehow felt the full explanation might give her too many ideas. (Let alone getting her together with N so they could make trouble together...)

I fear your child. I am glad when she comes of age I will be an old lady and no threat...

[livejournal.com profile] dancingwolfgrrl and I had brunch together this morning while she was watching N, and I was thoroughly enchanted (again, still) by your daughter's brilliance. She is totally a rule-pusher, but it's so clever, it's hard to be the least bit annoyed by it. It's also very hard not to laugh ;)

She insisted that I read her the L.L. Bean catalog, and pointed out every sock, hat, and bird in the whole thing. Never has a mail-order catalog been so much fun!

Socks?
