happy due date to meeee
happy due date to meeeeeee!
happy due date, happy due date,
happy due date to me!

And now, the waiting.

I seem to have developed a problem with spicy foods in the past week or so, which makes me a little grumpy. They were fine up until about Thursday, at which point they started giving me trouble. I ate only unspicy things today, though, and had no reflux. Hurrah!

This week was our first week getting a delivery from Boston Organics. Friday, I came home from [livejournal.com profile] fennel's to find a big green box on the doorstep. Inside were apples, tomatoes, bananas, oranges, pears, an avocado, a big butternut squash, some lettuce (eh), a couple of beets (what the heck do I do with beets other than pickle them?), a head of cauliflower, a tasty grapefruit, and a loaf of 7-grain bread. Jackpot! I recently decided to sign up for their every-other-week $25 delivery box because the idea of fresh fruits and vegetables coming to my door without me having to leave the house or even MAKE ANY CHOICES AT ALL was suddenly very appealing. And, so far, so good. I'm a bit disappointed that I got a head of lettuce, though -- I thought I'd marked "no" under all of the lettuce boxes and added "please substitute with non-lettuce greens
and bananas". Maybe I did, and they're just testing me. Anyway, I think this will be an excellent experiment. I know that starting the service as we go into the winter is a little silly, as soon everything they deliver will be from faraway farms, but hey, I'm still excited.

What else? I tried to move furniture with [livejournal.com profile] dilletante last night, but found that there were several things I couldn't carry. Now, this isn't because I didn't have the muscle, but rather because there's this gigantic LUMP right where I'd want to hold something against my belly to stabilize it. So, I carried some things, but mostly we called in [livejournal.com profile] ectophylla for some last-minute grunting. Now, we have a desk in our bedroom. Hooray!

I guess there's not much else to say. I just wanted to say hello to the world. Hello, the world!

Hello Molly!

Yay due date! :) More babeeez soooon! There are so many new wee ones on my friends list it's awesome.

My friend Deirdre was getting organics delivered too and she was incredibly happy with it. I'm thinking I might try it too.

My ex housemate two housemates ago used to make roast beets I think, roast with other rooty things. Or you could put them in juice, do you have a juicer?

No juicer, but roasted with other rooty things sounds good.

I think I have a mental block because I love pickled beets, and so I can't imagine them any other way. :)

Roasted beets are wonderful -- they got [livejournal.com profile] topaz_munro, who wouldn't go within furlongs of a beet, to munch them happily.

Hello! :)

I tried Boston Organics and they were great. I stopped only because I couldn't eat all the stuff by myself before it went bad. I think you can check the "don't give me this" list on their website? They were excellent about my fairly extensive list when I tried them.

I must have just missed a lettuce on the "No" list. I went back and rechecked all of them, just to make sure. :)

Tricksy lettuce! That'll show it who's boss!

Beets

From: [identity profile] nitouche.livejournal.com
Yep, roasted. Scrub 'em, trim the ends, coat with olive oil and roast until tender. I recommend lots of butter & pepper, and you can peel them or not. Did they give you the greens? They can be used like chard.

Or there's always borscht...

9 days until the due date for me. My mother-in-law said she doesn't think he'll be early since I'm "not uncomfortable enough." I feel that I obviously don't whinge enough, since I'm perfectly uncomfortable, thank you very much! (Although I did go have a pedicure the other day -- a lifetime first, but since the lump gets in the way of foot-scrubbing it seemed a reasonable step. I hope you are being well-pampered!!)

No greens, sadly! I admit I was sad when I opened the box and there were no greens of any kind. Hmf.

A pedicure sounds like a dream to me, too, and I'm pretty certain I've never said those words before.

"Not uncomfortable enough"? Hah! Though, my uncomfortableness seems to be concentrated in the early-morning / late-night time periods. Once I get moving, I'm okay, but late at night I get a little creaky and cranky.

Did the beet greens get removed before arriving? Those are good in salads, IMO.

I third or fourth or whatever the suggestion to roast the beets -- we like roasting them in a bit of olive oil and rosemary, cut in thin slices. :) You can also make a good carrot-ginger-beet soup.

Congrats on due date! :)

Yup, no greens on the beets or off. Just the hairy bulby bit.

I tend to not eat salads at home; instead, I prefer to steam greens and eat them hot. Hence the love for greens and not lettuce. Lettuce will just sit in my fridge until I toss it, usually. ([livejournal.com profile] ceelove is saving this lettuce from that fate.)

Beets: Trim off greens, boil until tender, peel. Now, they're ready for anything, from slicing and eating to chopping up with cream cheese and wrapping in phyllo dough or putting into quiche or stew. So tasty!

mmmMMMmm...roasted beets! Roast them with some carrots, parsnips, onions, garlic cloves, potatoes...yummy!

When I was just a Spawny, myself, my dad would take my mom out for a very special dinner for each week I was late. Kinda set up the wrong incentives for getting me to leave, but at least mom was happy while I was being stubborn :)

roast beets are indeed awesome. they can also be steamed with other things for a not-fried stir-fry to go on rice. or microwaved for a quick fix :)

We love Boston Organics! But they don't seem to be great about following through on the instructions of what not to send -- we keep getting mushrooms no matter how many times we click NO MUSHROOMS!! But the rest of it is usually good enough to make me forgive them for putting in nasty fungi.

Lettuce is a misdemeanor, at best. Maybe more like a parking ticket. The rest of the food has definitely been tasty.

Beet and red onion salad! With a nice vinaigrette! I even have a recipe somewhere, but improvisation works, too! Cucumbers are good in it, too - plus that's good for very-pregnant edema, too!

Yum!

Yum! Beets! (I have no additional suggestions, other than tossing already roasted or steamed beets with balsamic and evoo, which is simple and delicious - yay! :)

Toss roast warm beets with nice vinaigrette and let them stew in that so they absorb it (MMMMM).

Layer roast beets, goat cheese (or 1/2 goat cheese and 1/2 cream cheese) and steamed leeks (or asparagus)in a loaf pan, (cheese beets cheese leeks cheese) even more fun if you can have a layer of separately roasted yellow beets - you get a stained glass window effect. Cover with plastic and weight it down, let sit in fridge overnight to compress. Slice and serve.

toss roast beets, goat cheese, toasted hazelnuts over salad
