that kind of night
Originally uploaded by moominmolly
First, bad RSI-type arm pain. Then, debilitating vertigo for a day, bad enough that [livejournal.com profile] spike took me to the ER. Diagnosis: not a brain tumor! BPPV. Which is nice and all, but more or less seems to amount to "sometimes this shit just happens and you can't walk, surprise!"

Yeah so anyway last night I ended up at Sound Bites with [livejournal.com profile] redheadedmuse who caught me on film doing exactly what I had been doing before she whipped out the camera. I just wish it had been spicier.

Um. Well, yay no brain tumor! But bummer about the rest of the day.

I had BPPV last summer. TOTALLY FREAKY. I did the lie on your right, sit up straight, lie on your left, repeat exercises and it went away, but there's also a PT maneuver that apparently works really well, too. My trip to the doc was precipitated by standing up after putting on my shoes and promptly falling into the stairs. I was also relieved that it wasn't a brain tumor.

Yes! So relieved! Especially since I also had a monster headache that wouldn't go away even under an onslaught of ibuprofen.

I'm glad to hear it went away for you and hasn't come back. I don't want to have to memorize the Epley maneuver thing and constantly be worried that I'm going to fall off my bike!

Wow, that sounds a lot like the freaky neurological symptoms my mom randomly gets. Like, where she can't raise her arm for six weeks, or can't get out of bed she's so dizzy for a week. Except in her case I believe it's psychosomatic.

Anyway. Blech! Sorry your life is whupping up on you!

Glah! A week! Wow.

So if she does have BPPV, there is a fairly simple set of movements you can do (which [livejournal.com profile] gretchens refers to above) that make the vertigo go away. It might be worth her trying, since it's not hard and if it works, bonus!

I believe it was diagnosed as something else, but it was many years ago now, and just one of the many weird things her brain sent up.

Should have known there were bad 'things to come' when you woke up with that "I can't get started" feeling, and food didn't help, even 'salt peanuts.' I am glad you got to have "a night in Tunisia", though.

All mysteriousity aside, I'm glad and thankful that it wasn't a brain tumor, or malignant pathological degenerative debilitating toxic equilibrioceptive disease. Or something that eventually gets named after you. (Although "Labyrinthine fistula" sounds like something I saw these women do at a party once...)

I'm glad you're OK. And next time you want to get bdizzy, just let me know.

Yikes! ER visits are no fun; I'm sorry you had to have one! Also, it is extremely weird that there are named techniques for "wiggling your head around to make you less dizzy," even though it also makes perfect sense. I hope you're feeling better today!

Ohhhh....ugh. :(

Dizziness is so awful.

I'm glad it was just BPPV. I only recently learned about it because a friend got it. She seems to manage it just fine with the little exercises.

I never heard of BPPV, but 6 years ago I had a bunch of vertigo and needed to go to the ER just to be hydrated; moving my head enough to drink water made me vomit! They didn't mention BPPV and said it's probably a viral infection or something. They gave me some Meclizine 1 and some Phenergan2 and sent me home. The anti-vertigo meds didn't really work but the anti-nausea ones did. Being spinny and pukey was terrible. Being spinny and not-pukey meant I was well enough to stay home and played video games3 It got better after about a week and a half, but I didn't get any new superpowers. That's where the playa name that I never use came from, viz.: Vertigo.

1 Generic drug name a.k.a. Bonine, Bonamine, Antivert, Postafen, and Dramamine (Less Drowsy Formulation). An antihistamine that is often prescribed for inner ear infection related vertigo.

2 Trade name for Promethazine held by Baxter Healthcare Corp. a.k.a. Promethegan, Romergan, Fargan, Farganesse, Prothiazine, Avomine, Atosil, Receptozine, Lergigan. Used as an antiemetic. Along with other more toxic chemicals, e.g., cyanide, one of the ingredients in the poisoned Kool-Aid in the Jonestown Massacre.

3 Primarily Okage: Shadow King, a Japanese console RPG with good visual style but mediocre gameplay. Playstation 2.

You went to the ER dizzy and they told you that you had rocks in your head?

Any day you need to visit the ER is not usually a good day, but hearing that there's nothing seriously wrong with you is a big relief!

I'm amused that the treatment seems to be "shake your head around until everything goes where it's supposed to." Not many ailments get to have treatment like that. :-)

Sorry to hear you have bad arm pain! Norman (my husband) has suffered from that for years, and it really sucks.

*hug*

Oh yikes! That sounds scary, and I'm so glad it's not a brain tumor. I hope it never comes back.

There is something a tiny bit charming in the abstract about problems that can be treated with maneuvers, though.
